Name of Assignment: Atomic Model Subject: Chemistry Facilitator/Teacher: Mrs. Shirkhodai
Description of Work/Assignment: The atomic model project challenged us to create a model of the given element. I was assigned with sulfur. The model also included research on the element with the 3 dimensional figure. Creating a professional video was the final step of the project, which Mrs. S evaluated and graded the work we had completed.
Which 21st Century Skill do you feel this assignment addresses, and why? The 21st century skill I feel this assignment addresses was critical thinking. I evaluated the materials that suited and completed the model. I also had to observe how the model would hold up. If it fell apart I had to problem solve to fix it.
What are you most proud of from this assignment, and why? The 21st century skill I feel this assignment addresses was critical thinking. I evaluated the materials that suited and completed the model. I also had to observe how the model would hold up. If it fell apart I had to problem solve to fix it. How did you develop and/or improve upon your 21st Century Skill with this assignment? I developed critical thinking in this assignment by evaluating, observing, problem solving, and asking myself questions. During the pandemic and doing school at home I have developed critical thinking skills in my everyday life. This project let me put those skills to good use.
What was most difficult about completing this task? The most difficult part of completing this task was finding the materials around my house and trying my best not to buy too much. I ended up only buying gorilla glue. For the rings I used cardboard and an old frisbee, and styrofoam balls for the protons, electrons, and neutrons.
How could you improve this work? If you could start over, what would you do differently? The project could’ve been improved by using different material for the rings. It was a difficult task to cut circles out of a cardboard box. If I bought some type of wire or rings at the store, the project would look more neat and professional.
How does this relate to what you have learned in the past? This project is related to what we have been learning in chemistry class. We have been practicing the elements on the periodic table and how to work with them. This project correlated well with what we have been learning and what we have learned.
How can you apply this to future learning? Chemistry is a subject that is used in many different degrees and fields of learning. Though I do not know what I will do in the future, I may use chemistry. Even if I don’t, it will come in handy for college and maybe a specific degree that I would like to graduate with.
